What happens at your first mobile groom

· Nancy Caamaño

Sample post. Nancy to review.

If you've only ever dropped a pet off at a salon, a mobile groom can feel a little strange the first time. Here's how mine goes.

Before I arrive

You book online, and the form asks about your pet's coat, age, and anything that makes them nervous. Please be straight with me there. If your dog hates the dryer or your cat bolts at the sound of clippers, I'd rather know now. It changes how I plan the visit.

When the van pulls up

I park near your home, usually at the curb or in your driveway. If you live in an apartment community, tell me when you book and we'll work out where the van fits. Then I come to your door, say hello, and meet your pet before anything else happens. No rushing. A minute to sniff my hands goes a long way.

Inside the van

Your pet is the only one in there. It's quiet. There are no cages and no other dogs barking down the row. I bathe, dry and groom one animal at a time, and I watch how they're handling it. Some pets need a break halfway through. That's fine.

Afterward

You get your pet back at your own door, clean, fluffy and already home. I'll tell you what I noticed: a dry patch, a mat starting behind the ears, nails that need a closer look. Anything medical goes to your vet. If you'd like to rebook, just ask.

One more thing people like about doing this in the Triangle: no I-40 backups with a nervous dog in the back seat.
